ABSTRACT

This study is focused on “Social media and economic development in Oruk Anam Local Government Area” the objective of the study were, to find out if residents of Oruk Anam aware of the social media, to find out if residents of Oruk Anam use the social media, to find out the social media platforms,  residents use to communicate online, to find out if the residents of Oruk Anam use the platforms to communicate messages on economic development. Survey method was adopted for the study. Sample was draw from the cluster random sampling technique where 250 questionnaires were distributed to respondents. The theoretical framework used for the study was diffusion of innovation theory and socio-emotional selectivity theory. The method for gathering data, was the questionnaire. Findings from the objectives of the study show that residents of Oruk Anam are aware of social media and the way use and communicate is credible. It was concluded that owners of social media should provide a platform to check the problem of backlash in the social media so as to stop the loading of offensive content in order to make the information vital and accurate. Recommendation were that users of social media should be properly educated on the way they could process and upload information in the social media with a reasonable level of understanding and that users of social media should verify information before broadcasting the information.

INTRODUCTION

1.1     Background of Study

Social media are computer mediated technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, cancer interest and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks.

Social media has become an important communication tool to day as bots sender and seekers of information resort to the use of online platforms. Social media comprise of a group of internet based application that build on the ideological foundation of world wide web that allow the creation and exchange of user generated content (Kaplan and Haenlein, 2010). These are site for harnessing collective intelligence (O.Reilly and Battelle, 2009).
