IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA AND PARENTAL EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ IN MATHEMATICS (EDUCATION PROJECT TOPICS AND MATERIALS)

 

ABSTRACT

Mathematics is the foundation of science and technology and the functional role of mathematics to science and technology is multifaceted and multifarious that no area of science, technology can escape its application. Despite the importance of math to societal development , it is a subject that many students fail, fear and possibly dislike with this, this study therefore investigate on the impact of social media and parental educational background on the academic performance of senior secondary school students in mathematics. Diffusion and innovation, human ecology, attachment theories provided the framework for this study. A proposing sampling techniques was used to select 160 senior secondary school II students from ten schools in Odeda and Abeokuta south local government area, Ogun state (47 male and 33 female). Three research instruments PEBS (r =0.78), SMS (r = 0.82), MAT (r = 0.85).were used to collect data. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and ANOVA at 0.05 level of significant F (3, 73)= 4.869, F(3,73) = 81.228, were relatively significant for the achievement test, WAEC and NECO, parents level of educational achievement on academic performance F (3,74) = 46,240, F (3,73) = 34.939. were respectively significant for WAEC and NECO but not significant for achievement test F (3,74) = 1.088,effect of parents level of achievement on academic performance F (3,74) = 69.190, F (3,73) = 74.781, were respectively significant for WAEC and NECO but not significant for achievement test F (3,74) = 1.787, effect of social media on academic performance  F (3,76) = 2.726, F (3,76) = 88.099, and F (3,76) = 90.668 were respectively significant for achievement test, WAEC and NECO. Based on the findings, it was recommended that students should be educated on the influence of social media on their academic performance. Also, teachers should ensure they use social media as a tool to improve the academic performance of students in schools.
