1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Music to many people in many cultures is an important part of their way of life, social and cultural activities. Music can also be described as a phenomenon using the medium of sound which is organised and manipulated into socially accepted patterns that communicate intelligibly and meaningfully, verbally or non-verbally, feelings, emotions, ideas and events to people.
Ekweme (2008) also music can be refer to as a repertoire and channel of communication which serves as a potent weapon of social change, through a particular language of expression of music you easily know which part of the continent or country a group of musicians come’s from and provides the opportunity for all classes of people to meet as equals.
African music is historically ancient, and diverse with the different regions and nation of African having district musical tradition. Africans music is one of the cultural indices that make Africans African. It is a cultural identity that has to do with studying, playing of instrument, dance and use of various artifacts. But in simplest form we could define African music as music that has its origin, African i.e. music of the Africans.
The language of African music is best understood by the Africans themselves in that it is deeply rooted in the totality of all that make African culture.
Africa is a land of the blacks i.e. it consists of over 100% of black people of the world. they have some many traditions which are still prevalent and common among them till the present day. Inspite of the missionary incursions and introductions of European civilization through formal education, these traditions which in another word refer to culture, are all dependent on African music. culture as we know is the totality of all life experiences a man passes through, such experiences include the occupation, the dress pattern, the language, the belief, the value system, music, art crafts the favourite foods of the society.
