This article provides an overview of a pilot project incorporating the use of narrative texts into daily classroom instruction as part of the Young Migrant Education Program, TasTAFE (Y-MEP). The Y-MEP reading project is part of English Language Services at TasTAFE funded by the Department of Education and Training. Students are all refugee and migrant young adults aged between 17 and 24 years, who have recently arrived in Australia, or who have been studying at local secondary schools or colleges and are in need of further English skills. The project was funded for one year by Skills Tasmania and allowed for purchase of texts, professional development for teachers, and the production of supporting teaching materials.
