AN EVALUATION OF TEACHERS PERCEPTION OF YORUBA LANGUAGES CURRICULUM IN SOME SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS ( EDUCATION PROJECT TOPICS AND MATERIALS)

 

ABSTRACT

This project work focused on evaluation of teachers perception of Yoruba curriculum in some selected secondary schools in Abeokuta. The study employs a survey and descriptive design. questionnaire was used to carryout the investigation and 100 respondent was used to carryout the research. The data collected from the different items in the questionnaire were analysed using simple and percentage from the findings of the study, it was recommended that government should employ experienced and qualified Yoruba teacher in public secondary schools to handle the subject in each schools and provide necessary instructional material to teach the subject.

1.0     INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Education is used as an instruction of change in any nation especially in Nigeria, so for education to achieve its objective there is the need to plan, design and implement a curriculum of any subjects strives to contribute to the national goals and aspiration which includes.

  1. The inculation of national consciousness and national unit.
  2. The inculation of right types of values and attitude for survival of individual and the Nigerian society.
  3. The training of mnd in the understanding of the world around and
  4. The acquisition of the appropriate skill, abilities and competencies both mental and physical as equipment of the society.

The curriculum of the secondary school in the 9-3-4 system personal and social outlook and the new Yoruba language curriculum package for the senior school programmes has a lot of special features which makes teaching and learning of Yoruba language a more challenging, appeasing, relevant and rewarding experience.

Among the special features of the curriculum are:

  1. The provision of Yoruba language programme that is based on choice or suitable and relevant themes units, contents, teaching methods students activities, teaching aids and evaluation.
  2. The reduction in the scope and content of secondary school Yoruba language without losing the high quality required at that level.
  3. The provision of a wide range of experience for students in the use of the concept centered approach to earning, problem solving and activity-based technique for the acquisition of basic Yoruba’s knowledge and skills.
  4. The inclusion of innovation element into the syllabus, through the emphasis placed on Yoruba throughout the 3 year course and the introduction of Yoruba’s principle concepts and skill, that are relevant to the current trends in the discipline.
  5. The organisation of the programme around a carefully selected sequence to integrate the knowledge and experience gained in the physical, human regional Yoruba as a subject in the senior secondary school in accordance with the National Policy on Education (2006) helps the Nigeria secondary school students to:
  • Understood the concept of man-environment relation that is to examine the life of a man within the physical and cultural environment and to explain their interactions.
