PROBLEMS OF TEACHING AND LEARNING ENGLISH LANGUAGE AS A SECOND LANGUAGE IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN AKWA SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF ANAMBRA STATE (EDUCATION PROJECT TOPICS AND MATERIALS)
ABSTRACT
This study which is aimed at assessing the Problems of teaching and Learning English Language as a second language in senior secondary schools in Akwa South Local Government Area of Anambra State. In obtaining the data relevant to this research work, questionnaire was used to obtain information from different sources. A total of 120 questionnaires were administered for this study, and with careful monitoring, all were returned. The questionnaire were in two sets. One for the students and the other for English teachers in selected secondary schools in Akwa South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The study highlights that English Language despite of the status of English language as the second language in our nation, the performance of students in it both within and outside the school has been very poor. It has been attributed to some problems encountered in teaching and learning of the language which includes: students physical and psychological problems, lack of specialist teachers of English, inadequate method and supply of teaching materials, insufficient time allotted to English language in the school time table and students inability to use English in communication.
It was concluded that the teachers should inspire the students by using interesting activities to minimize the learning difficulties which may have be the cause of low intelligence, inattention and poor listening habits. Again, materials of instruction must be adopted to the student’s interest and needs, parents should show concern for their children’s welfare. They should ensure that their words/children are in the best physical and emotion to receive the instruction offered.
