TEACHING AND LEARNING OF INEQUALITIES IN JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL (EDUCATION PROJECT TOPICS AND MATERIALS)

CHAPTER ONE

  •     INTRODUCTION

It is necessary to understand what is meant by the term “MATHEMATICS” before a thorough study of this type can take place. It is customary of educational philosopher and Mathematician to attempt to define a term in various ways and this is what happens with Mathematics.

In medical society, Mathematics is the bedrock of all human endeavour because there is need for logical thinking in all aspect of human life and Mathematics as a field involved logical thinking, hence, every living soul need to have the knowledge of Mathematics for him/her to perform above expectations in his/her choosing field.

This days, one wonders why some people perform below expectations in their chosen field. Though a lot of factors are responsible for this, but from the result of research works. It shows or was proved that about 30% of it was due to the fact that they cannot think logically before taking a decision. Since, this cannot just start during the day light. It can be trace back to their school days, hence the students’ performance and achievement in the subject that involves logical thinking i.e. Mathematics. What is influencing the students’ performance and achievement. For instance, the teacher, the government, the parent, the sex.

In this case of this study, we shall take a critical look at how sex (that is the biological different between two human being, male or female) can affect the student achievement as well as to compare their (male or female)e achievement in mathematics.

Nigeria been an advancing country, Ogun State isone of the subset (OGUN C NIGERIA) and Osiele C OGUN) (OSIELE C NIGERIA) will be taken as the case study, especially the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta.

Different definitions are given to the term mathematics by some Educators:

Mathematics is the ability to manipulate and think logically (Munat, 1999).

Mathematics is science of numbers (Tab, 1999).

Mathematics is a language and mode of expression that is best suited for scientific expression and taught that can increase creativity and invention (Adegoke, 1998).

Mathematics is an aspect of human cultural develops in respond to environment need (Adegoke, 1998).

Mathematics is the science of counting, measuring and describing in two variables with the aim of suggesting method of approach to the topic
