Abstract

This work deal on the impact of drugs abuse in tertiary institution in Nigeria (a case study federal polytechnic Nekede, owerri).  Drug abuse today is a major cause for concern and has a negative effect on society at large. Though students constitute a large segment of drug abusers, adults also succumb to drug abuse. There is a tendency amongst middle-aged people to abuse prescription drugs.  In the methodology, descriptive research design was used. Primary and secondary sources of data were used through publications in which relevant information relating to the subjects of study were contained. Data were presented in simple percentage table and were analyzed using frequency and simple percentage method. It was concluded that drug abuse are in increase in tertiary institution of learning in Nigeria and has seriously affected student’s life after school. It was recommended that there should also be aggressive grassroots public campaign against drug abuse and quackery.

All dangerous drugs like opium, heroin, India-hemp, Cosaine etc. when not used under controlled conditions can lead to addition or sometimes to death. Grank N and Khan I. (1987) pointed out that nobody who reads their magazines will be surprised to learn that there is growing concern about the abuse of narcotic drug psychotropic substances. In march, 1987, the world health organization (WHO) collaborated with the government of the United Kingdome in a special conference on drug abuse which brought together ministers of health or serious officials from more than thirty countries.
