CHAPTER ONE

1.0   INTRODUCTION

Industrial relations could be defined as the network of social relationship between the employers and the unions, employers and their associations and government and their various agencies in the attempt to regulate terms and conditions of employment and perform other functions that directly or indirectly concern the imitation and substance of peaceful and purposeful labour management relations which involve applying machinery dealing with complaints grievances and disputes in an organization.

Industrial relation could be seen as the interviewing activities of the workers, management and government for better working conditions. It is also pertinent at this introductory part to note the term auditing, it’s primitive and rudimentary form can well be traced back to the ancient firms but the term auditing is seen today in its formed state and was established  in the late part of 19th century. Originally an auditor was one whom the receipt and payments of an establishment were read. In contrast with industrial relations practices in the advanced countries, Nigeria’s industrial relations system relies heavily upon state intervention and control with very little voluntary collective bargaining.

Looking at industrial relations from economic point of view, one could consider the implication of the four factors of production with their rewards and how they have affected industrial relations. The factors of productions are land, capital, labour and entrepreneurs. The entrepreneur or risk bearer combines the factors of production for proper utilization in order to get his reward, which is profit. Since the prosperity of both the employers and employees depends largely on the co-operation in order to keep the enterprise going, therefore they have to agree that the is a common philosophy to co-operate and make the enterprise grow and prosper for their mutual interest and satisfaction hence industrial relations.

  • BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The concept of industrial relation on organizational growth and development means the relationship between the employees and the management in the day to day working of an industry.

According to (ILO) International Labour Organization, industrial relations deal with either relationship between the state and employees and workers organization or the relations between the occupational organizational themselves.

Nature of industrial relations concerned with relationship of management and workers. To protect the interest of employees concerned with system, rules and procedures concerned with system, rules and procedures used by unions and employees role of regulatory mechanism in resolving any industrial disputes. The objectives of industrial relations is to maintain industrial democracy based on participation of labour in the management and gains of industry; to raise productivity by reducing tendency of high labour turnover and absenteeism, to ensure workers participation in management of the company by giving a fair say in decision making and farming policies, to establishes a proper channel of communication; to increase the morale and discipline.

To safeguard the interest of the labour as well as management by securing the highest level of mutual understanding and goodwill between all sections in an industry, to avoid all forms industrial conflict so as to ensure industrial peace by providing better living and working standard for the workers. To bring about government control over such industrial units which are running at a loss for protecting the livelihood of the employees?

1.2         STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

The failure of public organizations like champion breweries plc was predicated on the challenges they faced. Many of this challenges are still bedeviling the public sector as can be mentioned as follows: government don’t pay attention to the growth and development of such organization, to this extent it affect the organization because they lost most of their customers, lost of job and sometimes they embark of strike which it is the management and other business counterparts that suffers the setback, this can also leads to lack of concentration while on production.

The general idea far and wide is that these public sectors are suffering from poor management.

Another prevalent problem is copying, competing and mimicking the practice of champion breweries.

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

  1. To identify the cause of conflict in champion breweries plc.
  2. To access the impact of those strategies on the growth and development of champion breweries.
  3. To identify the problems faced by champion breweries in this direction.

1.6   SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study is important to government and every public and private official in order to maintain good industrial relation and have appropriates time period to apply industrial relation strategies in order to bring about growth and development in their organization or business. It will help management in industrial planning and conflict resolution purposes. The study is useful generally for everyone to always review and learn modern industrial relation and how it impact and affect organizational growth and development.

The study is however significant in the sense that it will be of immense benefit of the management and staff of champion breweries plc Uyo, Akwa Ibom State as well as business. It will also be useful to other researchers who may wish to carryout research on similar topic as a source of reference. The study will also be enormous help of whoever that seek solution to his problem on industrial relation an organizational growth and development.

1.7   SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This talks about the collection of concept, principles, rules, methods and procedures which have been tried and checked by general experience as offering explanation on a given field of study.

Therefore, industrial relation scope examine those principles, rules, methods and procedures which have been tried and checked by general experience as offering justification, for industrial relation practices, actions and why employers and management as well as employees and various do what they do in labour management relation. Some of the important scopes are: the unitaristic theory, industrial democracy theory, the Marxist/class conflict theory, the system theory etc.
