INTRODUCTION

 

1.1   background of the study 

Management in the broad sense, is not confined to private enterprises. It is also essential for the successful operation of a government department or agency, a public enterprise, a trade union, a non-profit service organization college or university.

In other words, management is organizational leadership and one of its central task is effective formation and development of available human and non human resources to achieve the objective of the organization.

These objective may be for example, to maximize profit or increase the firm share of the market in business enterprise, to improve efficiency or expand the scope of services provided by a governmental bureaus or department to get more member or to bargain more effectively for members in a labour union, or to improve the quality of instruction, expand facilities and enrollment and undertaken new research in an organization.

Moreover, managers at all organization levels have become increasingly involved in the process of developing human assets of the organization. Many executive now recognize that personnel administration in an obligation to be shared by representative of operating management and staff specializes.

For this reason, it is important for managers to know that there is nothing that can make them more excited above  their work than a sense of it’s importance and urgency, as well as the impact of managerial and personal functions being felt in their establishment.

The study of the problem stem from the way the banking industries is winding up every day. It is therefore the place of this paper to find out whither the impact of management and personnel administration can improve efficiency in a organization, greater productivity, a good performance of employee’s and development of human assets of the organization.

 

1.2   Historical Background

Chartered Bank was incorporated as a commercial Bank in October 1988, it commenced business on 5th December of the same year and become a public limited liability company on 13th May 1998.

Today, it is a universal Bank empowered to engage to capital market activities, insurance, investment to traditional commercial banking. It’s capital and reserves exceed N4.2 billion and total asserts N4 billion.

In response to phenomenal business expansion growth in assets, branch network and personnel, the bank designed a new organization strategy to decentralize decision making and enhance service delivering.

The mission of the bank is to deliver to the customer high value, at all time, in a broad range of universal banking product and service at competitive price. In their shareholders the bank promise a good return on investment wile maintaining a positive work environment in which every employee of the bank counts. The aspiration of chartered bank is to remain within the top 10 banks in the Nigeria financial system; a strong brand that is equated with quality and integrity such that their growth is sustainable.

Chartered Bank operate in careful, selected locations with geographic spread in stated of the federation and the federal capita; territory, offering specialized and well differentiated financial services to a board spectrum of customers. Through it’s expending network which currently comprises 34 retail installation; the banks service are available to individuals corporate entities and government.

Their strategy is to grow by gaming more of existing market and by developing new markets. There thrust into opens a new vista of opportunity of growth in service offerings. With continuous process re-engineering the organization arrangement has produced substantial gains in efficiency. The bank have reviewed their resources and enhanced automation in all areas. Their investment in networking make it possible to offer line, one stop banking of the bank. The bank’s investment in a more robust software package has further entranced the quality of these services and sharpened our competitive edge.

Chartered Bank believe that their people constitute the most valuable asses of the Bank  the Bank prides it self in the high ethical standards and to be among the industry’s finest, chartered banks deployed capacity building and staff motivation strategies to ensure that it’s staff improved their versatility and proficiency in every department of banking.

 

1.3   STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The statement of the problem was to highlight the problems obtainable from the impact of management and personnel administration in an organization. Also, was he way the banking industries in winding up everyday.

 

1.4   PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

Nigeria as a developing country is facing tremendous set backs in the banking industry.

Therefore, the purpose/objective of the include:

  1. To find out the impact of management and personnel administration in an organization.
  2. To find out if management and personnel administration can operate to preserve the asset of the organization.
  3. To find out the strategy adopted by management to decentralized decision making, expansion growth in asset, breach network and personnel.
  4. To find out the impact of management and personnel administration on staff performance.
  5. To find out the whether any success recorded is attributable to management’s contribution.

 

1.5     SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study would be significant in the following ways:

  1. It would enable the readers to know how the impact of management and personnel administration and as a means of producing substantial gains and efficiency in an organization.
  2. Chartered Bank as one of the financial institutions would benefit from the study when adequate method of managerial and personnel functions is adopted by the bank.
  3. Also, others banks would benefit from the study if the impact management and personnel administration is adopted in the their organization.
  4. The study would alert government to the important of management and personnel administration in the organization (Agencies and partials).
  5. The impact of management and personnel administration in an organization will be of great significance to student of management in their studies.
  6. The significance of the study will also enable potential researcher’s on the impact of management and personnel’s administration in an organization.

 

1.6   SCOPE/LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The scope of the include the entire department in chartered Bank Plc. Uyo. The study could not take an intensive course as it was intended due to financial constraints. Also time constraints as project writing was united to only the second term of 2002/2003 academic session.

 

1.7   ASSUMPTION

It was assumed that both the business development manager (BDM) and staff of chartered Bank PLC, Uyo would cooperate with researcher by completing and returning the questionnaire to the investigator within four days to enable him conduct the study in time.

It was further assumed that up to 80% of the questionnaire sent out would be returned to the investigator to justify conducting the study.

It was also assumed that the topic of the project would give maximum and needed co-operation to the researcher though completing and returning the questionnaires.

Another assumption made was that the project supervisor will give the researcher necessary and adequate guidance for conducting the study.

1.8   RESEARCH QUESTIONS

(1)    What are the personnel concept of management?

(2)    What are the positive approach to manage an   organization?

(3)    What are the problems of middle managers?

(4)    Does the activities and equipment of a firm remains inactive and         unproductive except for human effort and direction?

(5)    Does personnel administration involve the ability to think innovatively, and the forcefulness necessary to present ideas successfully at the top management?

 

1.9           ORGANIZATION OF THE STUDY

For the purpose pf easing understanding of this paper, the chapters are divided into five (5) and in the following sequence:

Chapter one contains introduction which comprises a brief history of the companying, statement of the problem the purpose of the study, significant of the study, limitation scope of the study definition of term used, assumption research questions and organization of the study is as well included in this chapter.

Chapter two is significantly concerned with the review of the related literature. Chapter three is concerned with design of the study including research metrology, data collection, population and sample size and the research question. The data so far collected are presented analyzed and presented in chapter four through the use of table and percentage to fully explain finding.

Finally chapter five which is the last chapter contains the summary conclusion and recommendation.

 

1.10 DEFINITION OF TERMS

MANAGEMENT: The body of these in position of administrative authority.

DIAGNOSING: To determine the nature of problem from it’s condition. In the body or in it’s behavior.

PERSONNEL ADMINISTRATION: The abilities to see relationship think at relatively high level of abstraction or think with relative objectivity even about situation in which one’s personnel interest are involved.

PERSONNEL GENERALIST: A person who has the ability to think innovatively, and the forcefulness necessary to present ideas successfully at the top management level.
