ABSTRACT

This research focused on “Channel TV Political Programme “Sunday’s Politics” and Electorate Support for Political Parties, a survey of Ikot Ekpene voters”. The objectives of the study was to determine the extent to which Sunday Politics impact on the lives of the viewers, to ascertain the level of political awareness create by channels TV political programme Sunday’s Politics. To evaluate the electorate support for political parties. Related literatures have been reviewed and the uses of social responsibility theory provided the theoretical framework base for this study. The study adopted the survey research method. The population of study, according to information from mutichoice available online, the total number of DSTV subscribers in Ikot Ekpene is 15700. An accidental sampling procedure was used. The instrument used for the collection of data for this study was the questionnaire. The result of the findings reveals that Sunday’s Politics programme influence the mind of the voters because they are educated on how to vote. When watching channel TV political programme “Sunday’s Politics” voters will know who will be the right candidate and the political party they are to support. It was concluded that Sunday’s Politics programme is an educational programme that educate the voters about the political parties. The study therefore, recommends that there is need for a Gotv network to be established in Ikot Ekpene so as to enable those who cannot afford DSTV to watch the programme on channel TV. The Sunday’s Politics programme shouldn’t be a weekly programme, it should be a daily or trice weekly programme.  There should also be opportunity for viewers to call in and express their views.

INTRODUCTION

  1. Background of the Study

Communication is an important element in human society in particular and living things in general. Society’s survival and growth demand among other things in a system of communication. According to Albert Silversteined (1970), communication is that process that has allowed man to survive in his current form despite his being singularly unsuited to survive in any particular environment.
