ABSTRACT

This study was to investigate the influence of journalism code of ethics on journalism practice, a survey of journalists in Uyo. For the study to have focus, objectives were set and research questions formulated and; to examine the ways that the journalists code of ethics has influenced professional among journalists in Uyo. The study adopted a survey research method. The theoretical framework used in the study was social responsibility theory. The census method was used as the sampling technique with 42 according to staff nominal roll. The entire sample was used since it was a manageable size. Data was gathered through the use of a structured questionnaire. At the end, the study found out that every practicing in Uyo has a high level of knowledge of the journalists code of ethics, but some used same as standard for measuring their actions in the line of duties while others do not, despite their knowledge. The study concluded that the code of ethics emerged as a respose to the crisis of confidence in journalism, hence recommended that the journalists and other media professional bodies should ensure that there is real unionism in the profession by ensuring that journalists’ right are not trample upon.

INTRODUCTION

  1. Background of the Study

Journalism is fundamental in ensuring purposeful and peaceful co-existence in the society. They are indispensable to the success of every human endeavour. Through their agenda  – setting role, the journalism practice set the hierarchy of current issues, determine the extent of transmission and established the terms of reference and limit of debate, which ultimately influence peoples actions, reactions, decisions and judgement on the issues so raise.
