ABSTRACT

This study examines the influence of mass media in the development of rural areas: a survey of Ikono LGA. The objectives of the study were: to find out if the people of Ikono use the mass media at all, to determine how accessible mass media are to Ikono people, to determine if the mass media have created any effects in the lives of the rural dwellers, to determine if the media play any role in the development of Ikono Local Government. Research questions were formulated in line with the objectives of the study. The research design adopted for the study was the survey method and the questionnaire forms were distributed to 300 respondents through purposive sampling technique. Frequently distribution tables and simple percentages were used in presenting and analyzing the data. Finding reveals that of all mass medium, radio is the most effective because of it ability to penetrate wide into the rural areas. It was concluded that the mass media has contributed to the development of Ikono, since the messages have impacted positively on the lives of the people, it can be viewed effectively. Among the recommendations made were that Development programmes should be air in local languages on the radio so that the greater number of the ruralites should decode the messages and put to use.

INTRODUCTION

1.1     Background of the Study

The issue of social development in Nigeria’s rural setting depends on communication as an essential instrument which characterizes human existence. From inception, human beings have sought to improve their ability to receive and absorb information about their environment and also increase the speed, ea and variety of their method of transmission of information. Then come the sharing of ideas, values and norms which was made possible by means of communication.
