CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Entrepreneurship is the process of which individuals, either on their own or inside organization pursue opportunities without regard to the resource they currently control. The purpose of characterizing entrepreneurship within this context is to focus on what entrepreneurships do.
Moreover, as Stephenson (1990) put it, “their behavioural, definition explicitly endorses a view that entrepreneurship can exist in any firm, large or small”.
Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa is naturally endowed with millions of acres of arable land, 38.5 billion barrels state oil reserves, vast gas reserves, a variety of unexploited minerals, and a wealth of human capital by virtue of its estimated population to 150 million approximately.
Okeke (2013) and Okelukwu (2014) argued that Nigeria is the world’s second largest economy, after South Africa”. Measuring its development, Nigeria accounts for 15 percent of Africa’s total output and 16 percent of its foreign reserves, while it accounts for half of the population and more than two-third of the output of West Africa sub- region.
The nation has implemented far reaching economic reforms aimed at improving micro and macro-economic management in order to liberalizing markets and trade, and the business environment. This infrastructure pave ways for entrepreneurship.
Entrepreneurship from etymological point of view, is a process of learning, shaped by mindset(s), and leading to a business proposition. Learning process here requires full support through mentoring and coaching which is an essential preparation for nation’s development. Entrepreneurship to an ordinary man perspective, is the capacity, willingness to develop organize and manage a business venture along with any of its risk in order to make a profit. Okezie and Njoku (2012) characterizes the term within the frame of industrial growth and development of a nation and admitted that entrepreneurship is pertinent to the analysis of how new ideas or ‘recipes’ for reconfiguring objects in the material and social world can be harnessed to enhance a nation’s wealth”. Taking this characterization into a more managerial theory and context, a country’s economic progress depends on its ability to increase the value of what is produce with its resources base such as; (people, land and capital). Within this context, the researcher attempts to profers that “entrepreneurship is the main mechanism that creates wealth, job opportunity and development for the nation, only when the role of coaching and mentoring generate a pivotal energy.
This perspective gives rise to an interesting “growth paradox”, which at times occurs when a firm becomes so successful. Thus, the research seek to clarify the role of coaching and mentorship in the development of entrepreneurships in Nigeria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
To tackle the problems of Nigeria’s economic growth, concerned effort must be made to fashion out true entrepreneurial skills and directional ideology.
Small and medium scale enterprises especially, entrepreneurial activities have played important roles in the development process of most sectors of developed economies, and proved to be one of the most viable sectors with economic growth potentials. But there is no adequate appropriation of the role of coaching and mentoring whose task focus on proper technical briefing. These disconnections does not allow entrepreneurs to achieve specific objectives, or develop more faster the skills of listening and observing that lead to entrepreneurship development. The researcher look at this as a major problem which indeed, need to tackled and solutions proffer. Thus, the study examines the role of coaching and mentorship in the development of entrepreneurship in Nigeria.
