CHAPTER ONE

1.0     INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this study is to describe thunderstorms as a climatological factor with specific reference to precipitations relationships increasing specific interest and knowledge of the physical characteristic of thunderstorms. Mogil (2007), have indicated the importance of thunderstorm rainfall within the hydrologic cycle. Thunderstorms have great significance in the continental climate or the Middle West principally because of their associated precipitation. Therefore, detailed knowledge of the distribution of thunderstorms and thunderstorm rainfall is essential in the understanding of the rainfall distribution and water resource.

The analysis in this study was accomplished using climatological data entered on IBM punch cards as this procedure permit rapid processing of voluminous data (Vidali, 1992; Deng, 2006).

Since thunderstorms are weather phenomena of relatively small area   extent and exist in one location for only a short period. This major analytical problems resulted. The first was obtaining a network of climatological station which would occur in thunderstorm occurrences. The second was determining from daily climate records the amounts of precipitation resulting from thumderstorms and being usually of only a few hours duration.
