ABSTRACT

This research work focused on the development of a web based vehicle booking system using Goshen Transport Company in Ikot Ekpene as case study. The problems identified in the existing system that necessitated the developemt of the web based vehicle booking system include: passengers cannot book for transportation online because of the absence of a web based vehicle booking system, it is difficult to retrieve passengers booking information reports when needed, manual recording of booking and ticket information is tedious, time consuming and easily misplaced and long queues at the park. The objectives of the study include to: create a system that will aid passenger transit booking online, develop a system that will submit booking information to an online database and to implement a system that can be used to verify booking information of passengers. The significance of the study is that it will enable passengers to easily book for transit online. The software development methodology used is waterfall development methodology and the programming language used for the development of the study is Hypertext-preprocessor (pHp) and MySql database. It was concluded that a web based vehicle booking system is very useful as it enables organizations to be more efficient in their keeping transportation record operations. It is recommended that more research should be encouraged on the development of web based vehicle booking systems.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.0 Introduction

This chapter presents the introduction to web-based vehicle booking system. It presents the introduction, background of the study, statement of the problem, aim and objectives of the study, significance of the study, scope of the study, organization of the research and definition of terms.

1.1 Background of the Study

Transportation is concerned with the movement of passengers, goods and services, from one place to the other. To effectively carry out their duties, they keep record of transportation information such as booking information, manifest records and vehicle movement records. This information needs of transportation companies, captured on a daily basis, enables the management of the transport companies to effectively monitor operations and helps in the confirmation of relevant details as it pertains to passengers and the movement of transporting vehicles. Many transportation companies have implemented automated transit information systems to aid in proper record and information management. The overall objective is to provide a web based vehicle booking system to help meet the transportation needs of the customers.

A web based vehicle booking system enables passengers to book for seats online to avoid waiting on long queues before they can travel. Without a web-based vehicle booking system, it will be difficult to obtain needed reports related to transit details such as, booking reports for different destinations, financial information of amount of tickets sold for different destinations, etc. Transportation companies therefore need to implement a web based vehicle booking system to properly manage transportation information.

1.2 Statement of Problem

The following problems were identified in the existing system:

  1. Passengers cannot book for transportation online because of the absence of a web based vehicle booking system.
  2. It is difficult to retrieve passengers booking information reports when needed.
  3. Manual recording of booking and ticket information is tedious, time consuming and easily misplaced.
  4. Long queues at the park

1.3 Aim and Objectives of the study

The aim of the study is to develop a web based vehicle booking system. The following are the objectives of the study:

  1. To create a system that will aid passenger transit booking online.
  2. To develop a system that will submit booking information to an online database.
  3. To implement a system that can be used to verify booking information of passengers.
  4. To create a system that can be used to obtain vehicle transit reports when needed.
