THE INFLUENCE OF WORKING CLASS MOTHER ON PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT (EDUCATION PROJECT TOPICS AND MATERIALS)

 

ABSTRACT

This research work attempted to find out the influence working class mother on primary school pupils academic achievement in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State. The sample consisted of 100 pupils randomly selected from public primary schools in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State. The data collected were analysed using t- test statistical method. The results revealed that there is no significant difference in the academic achievement of students whose mothers are working and those whose mother are not working.

1.1     Background to the Study

The home is said to be an environment of satisfaction for children or child is well catered for at home, it will Influence all the Spheres of life of such a child. The fundamental social roles of women are to bear and raise children that will engage in productive task within the household and society at large (DRUNKER, 2002). Traditional, mother are expected to participate or engage in social activities or jobs that could call for are absence in the home environment, this fact is evidence in woman being employed, either in family agriculture or in the informal sector especially, trading. How ever, career woman are evolving a new social role in establishing a life of mother hood.

The nature of mother hood role is to cater adequately for the home demand, this leads some women to wonder that role is the one they which to seek, because most home responsibilities fall on the mother, and father have his own roles to play as the provider for the need of the family. But due to the economic situation of the country. Mothers engage in paid employment have often regarded as specific case of separation between mother and children and have consequently been the focus of considerable research overall, it will be that mother occupation perceive exerts little influence on the performance of children.

On the other hand “Foutana (1991) a sociology has found not different between the children whose mother are gainfully engaged and those whose mother are not. He noted that far from being adversely affected, the formal may even stand to gain intellectually and socially. The intellectual efforts stern from the stimulation and provision play material that most children use in day care. The child in daycare has the enormous advantage of coming in contact with other children.

Therefore, the better the children mother relationship, the more likely is that child will achieve to give and receive attention on. The absence of mother at home courses some problems with the child academic achievement.

Apart from the relatives and others such as sister, brothers, housemaid and Nany that looks after the children while the mother is away to work. If a child is deprived of his / her mother, it can affect his academic performance at school. In order hand, if a child – mother was not carefully monitoring or looking after her children at all the time, it can cause some problem for the children which can affect the academic achievement of the children. Such as if a mother does not check the class working book or her children does not call the attention of her children after coming back from school neither teacher giving them home work to do or not and she cannot even conduct home work for her children if their teacher does not give them any home work to do this can affect the academic performance of the children.
