NATURAL breeding of elephants in zoos is uncommon because bulls have proved dangerous to handle and are not usually kept. The collection and storage of elephant semen and artificial insemination are, therefore, being investigated by the Zoological Society of London as part of a research project on the preservation of mammalian spermatozoa1. Problems of semen collection2 were simplified by taking advantage of the culling programme in progress at the Kruger National Park, South Africa.Â
