ABSTRACT

Calvary Ministries (CAPRO), as the pioneering indigenous cross-cultural, non-denominational faith mission agency in Nigeria and Africa, boasts a remarkable presence with over 700 missionaries actively engaged in diverse cross-cultural mission initiatives across 35 countries spanning Africa, Asia, the Middle East, America, and Europe (“Our History”). Within the scope of this research, an exploration unfolds, demonstrating the historical alignment of scripture and Christian mission history with the preference for bi-vocational ministry practices over the prevailing “faith ministry” paradigm. This very paradigm, however, has remarkably propelled CAPRO’s ministry endeavors and expansive growth throughout the preceding four decades.

This study delves further, pondering the potential for enhancing CAPRO’s mission efficacy through the integration of alternative modes of ministry engagement, such as tentmaking and the innovative concept of Business as Mission (BAM), in lieu of the prevailing “faith mission” approach. Employing an array of research methods encompassing telephone interviews, online questionnaires, focus group discussions, and online surveys, an in-depth analysis unveils both the barriers hindering the adoption of bi-vocational ministry and the distinct attributes and practices characterizing bi-vocational missionaries within the CAPRO framework.

Revelations from the study underscore the existence of certain inherent institutional impediments that encumber the adoption of bi-vocational ministry within CAPRO. Furthermore, a compelling pattern emerges, indicating that bi-vocational missionaries within CAPRO exhibit shared characteristics and employ analogous practices that have effectively contributed to the success of their mission endeavors.
