ABSTRACT
This study is on Investigation into causes of Building crack in Akwa Ibom State. This is with the aim on investigating the causes of residential cracks in residential building in Akwa Ibom State with a view of identifying the causes, effect and solution. To achieve this, the following objectives were identified, to examine the causes of building cracks in residential building in Akwa Ibom State, to identify the effects of cracks in residential building in Akwa Ibom State and to investigate the remedial measures or approaches to cracks in residential building in Akwa Ibom State. The study will mainly educate the general public and the government of the day on the causes, effect and solutions to the cases of cracks in residential building. The population of study which comes from different field of specialist such as the insurers, quantity surveyor, the builders, the architects, the structural engineers was 30 people examined from different firms and sites. Information obtained with the questionnaire includes causes of building cracks, causes of building cracks and remedial measures or approaches of cracks. Obtained data were summarized using frequency distribution tables, and mean score. This study concludes that crack heat bridges effect, it weaken the wall insulation and thermal insulation properties, crack reduce the durability applicability, bearing capacity and services performance of building, crack on the wall surface damage to the later rendering will affects to the appearance, carbon diode penetrates into the contract through the crack and speed up carbonatron around the crack thus shortening the structure usage. It is therefore recommended that all building construction materials like sand, cement aggregates, reinforcement bars and particular foundation soil should be tested before commencement of any construction, and Government should quickly promulgate a national building regulation for the elimination or considerable reduction of the incessant Crack in Residential Building in Nigeria and quick response committee for investigating incidents of Crack in Residential Building.
