METHOD

  1. DESIGN OF THE STUDY

The research  design that will be adopted for this study is the survey research design. A survey research design is a description design aimed at collecting sample from the population in order to examine the distribution, incidence and interaction of education and sociological phenomena (Denga 1998). This design help researchers to draw samples from the population and data collected are representation of the respondents opinion about the phenomena at any given time. Thus, the researcher will adopt the survey research design which employs questionnaire to assess the perception and opinion of the respondents in a cross section of the population so as to make inference about the population based on the information from the sample survey data.

  1. AREA OF STUDY

The area of study for this research work is Uyo Urban. Uyo is the capital city of Akwa Ibom State. It had its status as the capital city of Akwa Ibom on 23rd September, 1987. As part of the state it is located between latitude 4032 , and5033 North and Longitude 7025 and 8025 East.

Uyo Local Government Area occupies the South-south part of the state and is bounded by Etinan, Ikot Ekpene, Uruan and Ibesikpo Asutan.

The annual rainfall and rainy days are 2.48km and 158m respectively (Etukudo, 1999).

As a city, the population of Uyo Urban is made up of people from other parts of the country and few foreigners. The indigenes of Uyo are mainly Christians. They are generally hospitable, creative, disciplined, hardworking and accommodating. Uyo Local Government area has a thick population because of its commercial nature. There are organizations like tertiary institutions, hospitals, business centres, banks, hotels and other firms in Uyo municipality.

  1. SAMPLE AND SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

The sample size for the study will be made up of one hundred and fifty (150) Junior Secondary School students carefully drawn from five (5) sampled schools out of the 14 schools.

Simple random sampling technique will be used in selecting the 5 schools obtained. The simple random sampling will be used  to select twenty percent (20%) of students in the five (5) schools.

  1. INSTRUMENTATION

The instrument that will be used for data collection for this study will be a questionnaire developed by the researcher. The questionnaire will be structured after the Likert   point model. Respondents will be required to respond to statement of a point scale of strongly Agree (SA), Agree (A), Disagree (D) and strongly disagree (SD).

The questionnaire will be divided into two sections, A and B. Section A contains personal data of the respondents ranging from name of school, gender of the students, class of the students and age of the students etc.

While section B, will investigate the opinion of the respondents on the  influence of deviant behaviors on the development of reading skills among JSS students.

  1. STATISTICAL TREATMENT

The data that will be collected will be organized and analyzed based on the research questions and hypotheses. The simple percentage (%) and chi-square statistics at significant level of .05 will be used. The simple percentage will be used to answer research questions while the chi-square will be used to test the null hypotheses.
