ABSTRACT

The availability and application of software packages in the teaching of accounting courses are crucial for enhancing the quality of education in business education programs. This research project aims to investigate the availability and utilization of software packages in the teaching of accounting courses in Imo State universities, Nigeria.

A mixed-methods research design will be employed, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. The research objectives include assessing the availability and accessibility of software packages for accounting education, exploring the extent of their utilization by business education lecturers, identifying the benefits and challenges associated with their application, and proposing strategies for improving the availability and effective use of software packages.

The findings of this research project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the availability and application of software packages in the teaching of accounting courses. The research will assess the availability and accessibility of software packages for accounting education, considering factors such as institutional resources, licensing agreements, and technical support. It will explore the extent of their utilization by business education lecturers, examining the frequency of use, types of software employed, and integration into the curriculum. Additionally, the research will identify the benefits and challenges associated with the application of software packages, including improved student engagement, enhanced understanding of accounting concepts, increased efficiency, potential cost implications, technical difficulties, and the need for training and support. Furthermore, the research will propose strategies for improving the availability and effective use of software packages, such as developing partnerships with software providers, allocating resources for software acquisition and maintenance, providing training opportunities for lecturers, and incorporating software-based assignments and assessments in the curriculum.

The implications of this research extend to universities, business education departments, lecturers, curriculum developers, and policymakers in Imo State, Nigeria. The findings will inform universities and business education departments about the current status of software availability and usage in accounting education, enabling them to make informed decisions regarding resource allocation and curriculum development. Lecturers can utilize the research findings to assess their own utilization of software packages, explore potential benefits, and address challenges in their application. Curriculum developers can consider the findings when designing and updating accounting curricula to incorporate software-based learning activities. Policymakers can use the research findings to develop policies that promote the availability and effective use of software packages in business education programs.

In conclusion, this research project aims to investigate the availability and application of software packages in the teaching of accounting courses in business education programs in Imo State universities, Nigeria. By exploring the current landscape, stakeholders can enhance the integration of software packages, thereby improving the quality of accounting education and preparing students for the demands of the accounting profession
