ABSTRACT

This research project aims to investigate the challenges associated with the implementation of the Business Studies curriculum in promoting skill acquisition at the upper basic level in Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. The study examines the barriers and limitations that hinder the effective delivery of the curriculum and the acquisition of relevant skills by students in the business studies discipline.

The research will employ a qualitative research design, utilizing interviews and observations to gather data from teachers, students, and curriculum experts in selected upper basic schools in Uyo Local Government Area. The research objectives include identifying the challenges faced by teachers in implementing the Business Studies curriculum, exploring the perceptions and experiences of students regarding skill acquisition, and proposing strategies to enhance curriculum implementation and skill acquisition outcomes.

The findings of this research project will contribute to the existing literature by providing insights into the challenges encountered in the implementation of the Business Studies curriculum at the upper basic level. The research will shed light on the factors that hinder effective curriculum delivery, such as inadequate teaching resources, insufficient training and professional development opportunities for teachers, and a mismatch between curriculum content and skill requirements. Additionally, the study will explore students’ perceptions and experiences regarding skill acquisition, including their understanding of the relevance and applicability of the curriculum content to real-world business scenarios.

The implications of this research extend to curriculum developers, educational policymakers, school administrators, and teachers. The findings will inform curriculum developers and policymakers about the need to address the identified challenges and improve the alignment between the Business Studies curriculum and the skill acquisition needs of students. School administrators can utilize the research findings to allocate resources and support teachers in overcoming the barriers to effective curriculum implementation. Teachers can benefit from the research by gaining insights into the perceptions and experiences of students, enabling them to tailor their instructional strategies and activities to enhance skill acquisition outcomes.
