CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Web based information system for pharmaceutical product is designed to help in the effective documentation of pharmaceutical products. Pharmaceutical Product Development (PPD, Inc.) is a leading global contract research organization (CRO) providing discovery, development and postapproval services as well as compound partnering programs. The company’s clients and partners include pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, academic and government organizations. While PPD is mainly known for conducting all aspects of drug development for its clients, it also invests directly in developing new products through its compound partnering program. Technology (IT) remained comparatively very less in Health sector than other sectors despite having more potential. Health Institutions, which is important sector, should encourage IT usage resulting better productivity, effectiveness, efficiency and economics leading to better health care to all. This paper tells a success story of implementation of ICT in monitoring of medicine in health Institutions such as Juhel Pharmaceutical LTD implemented by National Informatics Centre, Enugu State Centre for Directorate of Health Services, Enugu. System works on low-end resources and E-mail based data transfer from District Hard Quarter to State Head Quarter. Implementation of Med-Centre in all the districts of Enugu results in check on pilferage of medicine, increase in availability of medicine at Government Institution, increase in attendance of patient/doctors in health institution, optimal utilization of medicine and data capturing at source, resulting in availability of error-free data at State Head quarter The pharmaceutical industry develops, produces, and markets drugs licensed for use as medications. Pharmaceutical companies can deal in generic and/or brand medications. They are subject to a variety of laws and regulations regarding the patenting, testing and marketing of drugs. For this web based information system for a pharmaceutical product to work, Jahel Pharmacy must have access to internet connection, web site and well design database.
1.1 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
This has to do with the title of the project, which is the design, and implementation of a web based information system of a pharmaceutical. Due to the problem encountered with the inventory control of a pharmaceutical industries, the need arise to develop a software that will assist to solve the problem. The problem caused by the use of manual method can only be solved by computerizing the inventory processing.
1.2 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
The aims and objectives of this project are listed below: To develop software called Pharmacy management system that will replace the manual method of storage. To stop or eliminate the difficulties people face with manual method of monitoring products. To demonstrate increased motivation to the pharmaceutical workers. To easy the work associated with manual method. To eliminate the error involved with the manual storage of pharmaceutical products. To save the time wasted when searching or sorting for a given pharmaceutical products.
1.2 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The main purposes of this project are
1. To computerize the Pharmacy management system in Juhel Pharmaceutical Ltd Enugu.
2. To devise the effective efficient cost effective means of using automated or computerized method to disseminate or spread information
3. To ensure adequate circulation of finished product.
4. To facilitate the services of the company to its customer.
5. To increase turn over.
6. To ensure adequate documentation of finished product.
1.3 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
With the growth in information technology, the study offers numerous values both to any organization that deals on data/information. Huge of files kept in the offices will no longer be there again because products information will be stored on the computer with the help of the Pharmacy management system. Because of the easy to use nature of the Pharmacy management system, any organization can easily buy it to make use of them.
1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This project work is limited to the use of Jahel Pharmaceutical Ltd Enugu. It is a web based information system of a pharmaceutical product for manufacturing industries.
1.6 LIMITATION OF STUDY
Owing to the scope of this project work as stated above, this project work is limited to a Web based information system of a pharmaceutical product of Jahel pharmaceutical Enugu. It is important to mention here that time was a major constraint in the course of fact finding. It is also wise to mention here that some information we need to work with was not collected because of the unwillingness of the staff to review such information.
1.7 ASSUMPTION OF STUDY
One of the major assumptions made in this project work is that manual methods of keeping pharmaceutical records are ineffective, time wasting, prone to error and high level of energy dissipation. It is also assumed that with the level of development in information technology, there is a serious demand to join this trend of information technology. It is also assumed that web based information system of a pharmaceutical product will motivate the staffs to work more with easy and enhance their work.
