Abstract:

In this study, we present the outcomes of applying Upward Continuation and Statistical Spectral Depth Analysis techniques to Aeromagnetic data collected over the Kaltungo Area situated within the Upper Benue Trough, Nigeria. The geographical bounds of the area span from Latitude 9°N to 10°N and Longitude 11°E to 12°E, covering approximately 12,100 km². Employing the Oasis Montaj software, we segregated residual field components from the overall magnetic field, and performed field analysis at varying levels of upward continuation. Utilizing a MATLAB-derived Slope Plot Program, we assessed the spectral depths of subsurface magnetic sources, while Surfer 8 software facilitated the creation of contour maps based on the results. Our investigations reveal that the Total Magnetic Intensity (TMI) and residual magnetic anomalies exhibit a prevailing SW-NE trend. Notably, magnetic highs are concentrated and elongated along a prominent SW-NE trending Kaltungo fracture zone, flanked by regions of moderately low to low magnetic anomalies. The shallower magnetic layer’s depth is estimated to range from 0.60 to approximately 1.00 km, while the deeper source’s depth varies from 2.25 to 3.25 km. The initial magnetic layer is attributed to shallower magmatic intrusions found in both the basement inlier and the sedimentary cover. The second magnetic layer is presumed to emanate from the basement. Since the depth to the basement serves as an indirect measure of overlying sediment thickness, it suggests a generally thin sedimentary cover in the region. Due to this limited thickness, alongside the presence of Tertiary-Quaternary magmatism in the basin, the area is improbable to be conducive for significant oil and gas accumulation. Nonetheless, it may hold promise for the exploration of certain magnetic ore minerals. However, a more comprehensive dataset is imperative to unveil the true economic potential of this area.
