Abstract
This study takes a critical view on how metaphor choices used in the language of cartoons in national dailies depict leadership crisis, as well as views how meanings and messages conveyed with metaphor in cartoons are understood by the readers. Two frameworks underpin the analysis of this study. First is Norman Fairclough’s view in critical discourse analysis which underlies certain ideology in this study and brought out the causative factors of leadership crisis. The second is Charteris-Black Jonathan’s critical metaphor analysis which identifies speaker’s intentions and ideologies behind language use. Both are used to examine the relationship between metaphors used in cartoons and how they are used for communication. This work reveals the communicative value of metaphor and how it is used by cartoonists to communicate and enlighten masses about the happenings in society. Cartoon’s use of figurative language makes it possible for cartoonist to conceal messages through it, and that provides a wealth of information about political issues and sentiments. Through the findings in this study, recommendations were made to students, teachers, leaders, governments, masses, and cartoonists in order to encourage them to help promote cartoon as a tool of enlightenment and language learning process.
