ABSTRACT

This research project aims to investigate the perceived influence of vocational guidance on business students’ career choices in secondary schools in Kogi State, Nigeria. The study explores the role of vocational guidance in shaping students’ career aspirations, decision-making processes, and overall career development within the business field.

The research will utilize a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. Qualitative data will be obtained through interviews and focus group discussions with business students, educators, and career guidance counselors. Quantitative data will be collected through surveys administered to a sample of business students in selected secondary schools in Kogi State. The research objectives include examining the perceived effectiveness of vocational guidance programs, assessing the factors influencing students’ career choices, and exploring the impact of vocational guidance on career decision-making.

The findings of this research project will contribute to the existing literature by providing insights into the perceived influence of vocational guidance on business students’ career choices in secondary schools. The research will shed light on the effectiveness of vocational guidance programs in Kogi State, including the provision of career information, exposure to various business professions, and guidance in identifying students’ interests, skills, and values. Additionally, the study will explore the factors that influence students’ career choices within the business field, such as parental expectations, societal stereotypes, personal interests, and perceived job prospects.

The implications of this research extend to educational policymakers, school administrators, career guidance counselors, and business education stakeholders. The findings will inform policymakers about the importance of implementing effective vocational guidance programs in secondary schools to support students’ career development. School administrators can utilize the research findings to enhance career guidance services and promote a supportive environment for students’ career exploration. Career guidance counselors can benefit from the research by gaining insights into students’ perceptions and needs, enabling them to provide tailored guidance and support. Business education stakeholders can use the research findings to align curriculum and instructional practices with students’ career aspirations and industry demands.
