SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN UNIVERSITY OF CALABAR, CALABAR, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study examined Social Media and the academic performance of Students in the University of Calabar, Calabar, Nigeria.  Literatures were reviewed based on the research objectives to investigate whether or not access to Social Media has a negative or positive impact on the academic performances of Students of University of Calabar, Calabar. The study was anchored on Social Learning theory, Uses and Gratification theory. Because of the research questions, the work adopted a descriptive method. Questionnaire and in-depth interview were used to gather data from the respondents. Majority (62.1%) of the sampled population strongly opined that Social Media has a serious negative impact on the academic performances of students in University of Calabar, Calabar Nigeria While minority 27.9% study population affirmed that Social Media have a positive impact on the academic performance of students of University of Calabar, Calabar and 10% of the study population were neutral. Therefore, the study concluded that there is need for students to focus more attention on their academic activities than other social media interactions or set a balance between the two. The work finally recommends parents/guidance and the school management to put a check on the type of phones their children use, peer groups they associate with and the social media activities they engage in.
