Abstract

This project research was conducted to find out the causes of conflict in an organization and how to resolve it. This research work believes that in every organization conflict must escalate if not handled (resolved) properly. The researcher used primary and secondary methods of data collection. The organization in question accepts the proactive approach in managing conflict. The managing strategy to conflict management in the organization is highly effective. The organization believed that forcing the conflict to a conclusion is found to be the best effective method of resolving conflict.

1.0  INTRODUCTION

1.1  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

       Nigeria telecommunication (NITEL) Plc is a Federal government owned company that provides telecommunication services in Nigeria, set up in 1985 as an amalgam of the telecommunication division of the defunct posts and telegraphs (PST) department and the Nigeria external telecommunication (NET) Limited. Nitel Plc now staff strength of about 12,000.

       It operates a three-tier organizational structure corporate Headquarter, six zonal and 38 territorial administrations. The structure is decentralized to enhance decision making, currently, the six zonal administrations are Lagos with Headquarters in Lagos, North West with Headquarters in Ibadan, central zone Headquarters in each state of the federation represents a territory except Lagos which has two territories (FCT). Abuja also represents Nitel also represents Nitel territory, now fully commercialized under the privatization and commercials to the provision of reactional and international telecommunication serious.

       Nitel Plc has 600,000 telephone lines of which 120,000 network with the planned expansion and modernization of the Network, the total installed capacity of telephone lines was expected to reach one million by 1997. one of the new serious provided by Nitel Plc is the cellular mobile telephone which other services provided by the company includes satellite lines, data communications and enhanced value added serious like voice-mail and paying. The company has firmly established its corporate existence by providing adequate, efficient, effective and modern telecommunication services for the nation’s development.

  • STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

Inappropriate selection of managers with good leadership quality may have result into conflict in many organizations.

The trend organizational conflict in all leads and has led to the rapid increase in the organization and tends to be an obstacle to the growth of out economy. Beside, the effort made by both managerial,, employment researchers and even government in form of strategies to manage conflict. e.g. Organizational structure, policies, decision like restructuring welfare provision to mention but a few conflict remains segmentation to our organizations.

The necessary for more effective and efficient conflict management strategies system from the concern that improper managed organizational conflicts can doom an organizational because of their destructive roles ranging from divergent objective and volumes between the owners managerial and employees (Richard H. Viola) to individual style and organizational are axonometric.
