ABSTRACT

This research project aims to examine the influence of professionalization in business education on the development of students’ professional abilities in public universities in South-West Nigeria. Professionalization in business education refers to the integration of industry-relevant skills, knowledge, and practices into the curriculum, with an emphasis on preparing students for the demands of the professional world. Understanding the influence of professionalization on students’ professional abilities is essential for enhancing the effectiveness of business education programs. This study seeks to explore the influence of professionalization in business education on students’ professional abilities, identify the key components of professionalization, examine the perceptions of educators and students towards professionalization, and propose recommendations for optimizing professionalization efforts in business education.

A mixed-methods research design will be employed, utilizing surveys, interviews, and document analysis to collect data from educators and students in public universities in South-West Nigeria. The research objectives include examining the influence of professionalization in business education on students’ professional abilities, identifying the key components of professionalization, exploring the perceptions of educators and students towards professionalization, and proposing recommendations for optimizing professionalization efforts.

The findings of this research project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the influence of professionalization in business education on students’ professional abilities. The research will investigate the impact of professionalization efforts, including industry collaborations, experiential learning opportunities, internships, and curriculum design, on the development of students’ professional abilities. Additionally, the study will identify the key components of professionalization that significantly contribute to students’ professional development. Furthermore, the research will explore the perceptions of both educators and students towards professionalization, considering factors such as its relevance, effectiveness, and implementation challenges. Based on the findings, recommendations will be proposed for optimizing professionalization efforts in business education, including strategies for strengthening industry-academic partnerships, enhancing experiential learning opportunities, and integrating practical skills into the curriculum.

The implications of this research extend to educators, students, university administrators, and policymakers in the field of business education. The findings will provide educators with insights into the influence of professionalization on students’ professional abilities, guiding their instructional practices and curriculum design efforts. Students can benefit from the research findings by experiencing a more practical and industry-relevant business education, better preparing them for professional careers. University administrators can utilize the research findings to inform decision-making regarding the integration of professionalization efforts into business education programs and resource allocation. Policymakers can consider the recommendations proposed in the research to inform policies and initiatives that promote professionalization in business education.
