Abstract:

Poor communication remains a significant challenge in the construction industry and is closely linked to project failures. Efficient information exchange among professionals throughout various construction stages is crucial to creating a feasible design that meets client requirements. This research focuses on evaluating the impact of ineffective communication on construction project delivery in Abuja and proposes strategies for improvement.

A quantitative research approach using questionnaires was employed to gather data from quantity surveyors, builders, engineers, and architects working with 25 registered construction firms affiliated with the Federation of Construction Industry (FOCI) in Abuja. A total of 75 questionnaires were distributed (3 per firm), and 40 responses were retrieved, resulting in a response rate of 53.33%, deemed adequate despite the pandemic lockdown.

Data analysis utilized Mean Item Score (MIS) and Relative Importance Index (RII) to assess the effectiveness of communication channels and identify the main causes of poor communication in construction projects. The study revealed that the most effective communication channels employed by professionals range from face-to-face/oral conversations (RII = 0.95) to maintenance training (RII = 0.83). Key causes of poor communication were identified, including poor feedback (RII = 0.89) and lack of training (RII = 0.82).

Furthermore, the research demonstrated that poor communication significantly impacts project delivery in terms of cost (MIS = 3.80-4.55), time (MIS = 3.83-4.50), and quality (MIS = 3.53-4.25). The study proposes effective strategies for enhancing communication in construction projects, which were found to be beneficial.

In conclusion, the findings underscore the negative consequences of ineffective communication on project delivery. Effective communication throughout the construction process life cycle is essential for achieving project objectives. Moreover, improved communication practices can positively influence various aspects, including contractual relationships, project planning, productivity, health, safety, and record-keeping.
