ABSTRACT

This research project presents a comparative analysis of the academic performance of early childhood and primary education students before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Jigawa State University. The study aims to examine the impact of the pandemic on students’ academic achievement, learning outcomes, and educational experiences in these two critical stages of education.

A mixed-methods research design will be employed, combining quantitative analysis of academic records and qualitative interviews with students and educators. The research objectives include comparing the academic performance of early childhood and primary education students before and during the pandemic, exploring the factors that influenced their academic outcomes during the pandemic, identifying the challenges faced by students and educators in adapting to remote learning, and proposing strategies for mitigating the negative effects of the pandemic on students’ academic performance.

The findings of this research project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on early childhood and primary education students’ academic performance. The research will analyze students’ academic records, comparing their performance before and during the pandemic, including indicators such as grades, test scores, and completion rates. Additionally, the research will explore the factors that influenced students’ academic outcomes during the pandemic, such as access to technology, home environment, parental involvement, and the effectiveness of remote learning methods. Furthermore, the research will identify the challenges faced by students and educators in adapting to remote learning, including technological barriers, lack of social interaction, and difficulties in maintaining student engagement. The research will propose strategies and recommendations for mitigating the negative effects of the pandemic on students’ academic performance, including targeted support programs, professional development for educators, and improved access to technology and resources.

The implications of this research extend to early childhood and primary education students, educators, policymakers, and educational institutions. The findings will inform students and their families about the impact of the pandemic on academic performance, helping them understand the challenges and potential strategies for success in remote learning environments. Educators can utilize the research findings to adapt teaching methods, provide additional support, and develop effective remote learning strategies to enhance student engagement and performance. Policymakers and educational institutions can consider the implications of the research when formulating policies and initiatives to address the educational challenges posed by the pandemic, ensuring equitable access to resources, technology, and support for all students.

In conclusion, this research project presents a comparative analysis of the academic performance of early childhood and primary education students before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Jigawa State University. By understanding the impact of the pandemic and identifying effective strategies, stakeholders can work towards mitigating the negative effects and supporting students’ academic success in challenging circumstances
