The challenge of inadequate urban planning in response to rapid urbanization and haphazard settlements is a prevalent issue across numerous urban areas in Niger State. The consequences of unplanned settlements encompass deteriorating living conditions, the rapid degradation of existing housing, and a surge in homelessness. Dwellers in these unplanned areas confront barriers to accessing essential resources such as clean water, basic services, and education. This research aims to scrutinize the developmental obstacles within the unplanned settlements of Suleja, while also exploring prospects for participatory developmental enhancements. Employing quantitative methodologies, structural questionnaires were distributed among residents in four specific communities: Madallah, Polosa, Chechenia, and Bakin Kasuwa. A total of 354 questionnaires were disseminated, and the subsequent analysis adopted a descriptive statistical approach. The outcomes reveal that within Suleja’s unplanned settlements, 13.7% of respondents identified insufficient land availability as a pivotal hindrance to development. Furthermore, 14.7% highlighted the absence of coordination among diverse stakeholders as a significant impediment in Suleja’s developmental challenges. Regarding infrastructural requisites, 9.93% emphasized the necessity for a comprehensive drainage network, while 10.9% underscored the importance of accessible clean water. Additionally, 10.62% of participants emphasized the need for reliable electricity supply. Consequently, this study advocates for the inclusive engagement of all stakeholders to effectively and sustainably enhance unplanned settlements through an urban renewal strategy. Furthermore, the research suggests the establishment of a novel satellite township adjacent to Suleja, featuring multi-story public housing of mixed utility, thereby accommodating the escalating demand for sustainable residential and commercial facilities within Suleja.
