Abstract:

Security stands as a paramount human necessity, encompassing various interconnected dimensions such as physical, emotional, social, economic, and political security. Within urban contexts, security concerns span a spectrum ranging from safeguarding lives, property, and health, to ensuring food and economic stability, as well as protection from both natural and human-induced threats. This investigation delves into the awareness levels among individuals regarding their personal security and safety, as well as their strategies for combating crime in the locale of Suleja. The study encompasses an analysis of prevalent criminal incidents in the area, an assessment of the populace’s safety consciousness, an evaluation of their resilience, and an exploration of crime prevention strategies, including the identification of crime hotspots. Employing a quantitative approach, the research integrates primary and secondary data sources. Questionnaires were distributed and their responses underwent descriptive statistical analysis. Furthermore, geospatial techniques were employed to pinpoint areas with heightened crime activity. The findings expose that 46.9% of the local residents encountered various forms of crime over the preceding year. Notably, armed robbery constituted 28.8% of these incidents, followed by burglary at 49.4%, car theft at 0.8%, and other forms accounting for 21.0%. An underlying cause of 35% of these crimes was drug abuse, while unemployment contributed to 39.2%, poverty to 23.5%, and miscellaneous factors to 2.3%. The repercussions of these criminal acts encompassed loss of valuables (57.7%), physical harm and fatalities (10.8%), economic setbacks (14.0%), psychological distress (17.3%), and other outcomes (0.2%). In light of these findings, the study’s recommendations underscore the creation of employment opportunities to address the elevated crime rates stemming from unemployment. Additionally, advocating for skill acquisition initiatives is proposed, enabling individuals to attain self-sufficiency and become creators of jobs rather than mere job seekers.
