Abstract:
This research project was conducted with the primary objective of investigating the impediments hindering the effective teaching of metalwork trades in Technical Colleges located within Niger State and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. To address this aim, five research inquiries were formulated and resolved, while five null hypotheses were crafted. Employing a descriptive survey research design and structured questionnaires, the study encompassed a population of 29 principals, vice principals, 9 Heads of Departments, and 59 metalwork trade educators from technical colleges offering metalwork programs in Niger State and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The entire population was included in the research. The instrument’s validity was established through assessment by three lecturers from the Department of Industrial and Technology Education at the Federal University of Technology, Minna. The instrument’s reliability was determined to be 0.83 using the Kuder Richardson K-R 21 formula. The research questions were addressed using mean and standard deviation, while the hypotheses were assessed via a t-test at a significance level of 0.05.
The findings unveiled several challenges encompassing management and instructional delivery issues that impede the effective teaching of metalwork trades in technical colleges. Most technical colleges lacked adequate infrastructure and facilities to support the teaching of metalwork trades. Furthermore, the study highlighted that the provision of qualified personnel, equipment, facilities, and training for principals and metalwork teachers in management and instructional delivery strategies could mitigate the challenges faced by technical administrators, teachers, and students. The hypotheses testing did not reveal any significant disparities between the mean responses of teachers and college administrators concerning the management, infrastructure/facilities, human resources, and instructional delivery challenges associated with the teaching of metalwork trades in technical colleges. Consequently, the study recommends, among other things, the provision of necessary equipment and facilities for metalwork trade departments in technical colleges, along with the recruitment of an adequate number of qualified teachers to handle all courses offered in the metalwork trades section of technical colleges.
