Summary form only given. The geographic regions in closest proximity to this planet’s coral reef ecosystems are comprised by a large population of Spanish-speaking people. It is important that the classroom teachers in these areas have access to the plethora of information contained in the latest research and curricular materials, many of which are currently published only in English. The “Coral Reef Curricular Materials Translation Project” will meet the teachers’ needs for these types of materials. A teaching manual of approximately 200 pages has been developed based on existing coral reef instructional materials. The manual is ideally suited for grades four through eight and includes fifty-one classroom activities drawn from more than twenty selected sources and reprinted with permission of the respective authors and publishers. Black and white copies of the manual in Spanish or English language will be available in the late spring of 1997. This manual will allow the transfer of the latest coral reef research from the laboratory to the classrooms of the wider Caribbean basin and to teachers of Spanish-speaking students in other regional, national, and international locations. The Coral Reef Curricular Materials Translation Project is a multi-agency initiative of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of International Activities and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Sea Grant Program, specifically the Mississippi-Alabama and the Puerto Rico Sea Grant College Programs; and the University of Southern Mississippi-Institute of Marine Sciences’ Gulf Coast Research laboratory/J.L. Scott Marine Education Center and Aquarium.Â
