Abstract

A controller is said to achieve exceptional control stability if the operator can achieve quicker response time and with minimal overshoot. This is more relevant to large complex temperature controlled processes like Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Unit (FCCU), where large overshoot and settling time may affect plant’s profitability. This paper aims to compare the performance measure of integer order PI and fractional order controller in FCCU. In FCCU, the reactor and regenerator are considered to be important and the most interacting operating units. The dynamic model of FCCU comprising of feed system, reactor, regenerator, and blower system is simulated. Based on parametric sensitivity analysis, the best manipulated variables for reactor and regenerator temperature control were chosen. Then, the process was approximated to best fit model. Integer order PI (IOPI) controller was designed and its closed loop performance was evaluated. Furthermore, fractional order PI (FOPI) controller was designed in order to assess its controllability over FCCU. The results reveal the incentives of investigated FOPI over IOPI
