Abstract

The significance of tourism continues to grow steadily, encompassing various dimensions that contribute significantly to a nation’s economy, societal well-being, and environmental health. It serves as an increasingly vital source of revenue, employment, and prosperity for many nations. The rapid expansion of tourism holds promise for sustainable development, including the alleviation of poverty, within Nigeria. The country possesses abundant untapped tourism prospects that are gradually becoming integral to its economic fabric. The prosperity of a tourist destination hinges on its ability to provide a secure and safe experience for visitors, transcending even economic considerations. The foundation of tourism lies in a peaceful world, yet challenges such as kidnapping, unrest, and terrorism have emerged as formidable opponents to the industry’s growth.

Security concerns pose persistent obstacles to the progression of tourism in Nigeria, impeding its development and necessitating thorough assessment and resolution of these issues. This study focuses on evaluating the spatial organization‘s role in enhancing security and safety measures in the design of the Gurara tourist center in Niger State. Employing a descriptive research methodology, this investigation encompasses a multi-phase approach. The initial phase involves an in-depth review of pertinent literature spanning tourism as a whole, encompassing security and safety considerations. This literature review yields key variables including security zoning, site boundary characteristics, drop-off procedures, security-focused landscaping (both hard and soft), entry point quantity, availability of tour guides, and the presence of watchtowers.

Data collection transpires through observational techniques utilizing a convenient non-random sampling method. Six diverse tourist centers nationwide were selected as study sites, with rigorous scrutiny applied to the identified variables across these locations. The amassed observational data undergoes content analysis, culminating in discernible findings. Notably, the preference for a single-route entry plan garners substantial attention, reaching 90 percent consideration. Conversely, factors such as defined site boundaries, security-oriented landscaping, and the presence of soft landscaping exhibit the least attention, at a mere 27.5 percent. A robust drop-off procedure commands a considerable 66.6 percent preference, and optimal zoning strategies secure approximately 50 percent consideration.

In summary, the investigation underscores the underutilization of security and safety measures in the development of tourism. Many tourist centers remain inadequately planned and developed, rendering them susceptible to security vulnerabilities. The study advocates for a paradigm shift, emphasizing the paramount importance of heightened security measures in the design of tourist centers. Professionals in the field are urged to prioritize security enhancements, and governmental authorities are encouraged to invest in the cultivation of potential tourist sites within Nigeria.
