Abstract:

The construction industry holds a notorious reputation for being among the most perilous sectors in terms of occupational accidents and fatalities. Such mishaps not only diminish workforce morale but also lead to project delays, compromised work quality, escalated project costs, and the necessity for compensating injured personnel. This research endeavors to assess the extent of adherence to safety protocols among construction site workers in Abuja, Nigeria. Through the distribution of well-structured questionnaires, 137 Safety Representatives affiliated with mid-sized construction firms engaged in ongoing projects in Abuja-Nigeria were surveyed. Collected data were subjected to both descriptive and inferential statistical analyses. The findings underscore noncompliance or complete adherence to safety regulations as a prominent driver behind the persistence of on-site casualties. Consequently, the study puts forth several recommendations, including the establishment of safety representatives at all sites with clearly defined roles and responsibilities, provision of hazard management training for site operatives, implementation of punitive measures for safety rule violations alongside incentives for robust compliance, and the insistence on adequate usage of personal protective equipment by workers before commencing tasks.
