This research evaluates fire prevention strategies within high-rise condominium buildings in Lagos State, with the goal of recommending effective measures for safeguarding lives and property. The study employs a combination of qualitative and quantitative data collection methods, utilizing structured observation schedules and questionnaires distributed to occupants of selected high-rise condominiums in Victoria Island, Lagos State. The research adopts a descriptive approach to investigate fire prevention strategies within these buildings. From a pool of 586 buildings, eleven high-rise structures were chosen using simple random and purposive sampling techniques. Among the three hundred questionnaires distributed, two hundred and forty-three were returned and analyzed using descriptive statistics, pie charts, and bar charts.

The findings reveal that 80% of the observed buildings employ active fire prevention strategies, although some remain non-functional. Additionally, 77% of the buildings exhibit satisfactory ventilation. Respondents from the selected high-rise buildings often attribute fire outbreaks to electrical faults. Surprisingly, 52% of respondents admit to not having encountered any fire safety instructions. This lack of awareness underscores occupants’ limited knowledge of fire safety measures and resources within their buildings. Consequently, the study suggests the installation and monitoring of high-quality electrical cables and fittings. Furthermore, passive fire prevention strategies such as building design, roof structure, fire compartmentalization, intumescent coating, photoluminescent markings, and fire-resistant materials are recommended. Occupants should be educated about fire safety instructions through awareness campaigns, education initiatives, and dissemination of information regarding operational fire prevention methods. Incorporating these recommendations into the design and construction of high-rise condominium buildings can significantly enhance their safety and resilience against fire-related risks.
