Abstract:

In developing countries, higher educational institutions, especially government-owned ones, often face challenges of inadequate, unhealthful, and unappealing environments. These institutions are consistently urged to enhance their campus infrastructure to ensure effective teaching and learning. This research investigates the state of infrastructural conduciveness at Gidan-Kwano campus of Federal University of Technology Minna, Niger State, Nigeria. Employing a descriptive research design, 380 questionnaires were distributed, with 315 returned and deemed valid. The descriptive analysis, yielding an overall mean score of 2.72, indicates that the state of infrastructural facilities and services at Gidan-Kwano campus is moderately satisfactory. Notably, health (Relative Importance Index of 4.91) emerges as the most pivotal factor influencing campus infrastructural conduciveness. Additionally, high-speed internet connectivity (Relative Importance Index of 4.879) is the most valued component for fostering a conducive campus environment. Exploratory factor analysis and Swisco classification highlight that laboratory and library facilities, as well as recreational amenities, possess moderate conduciveness, while internet facilities lack such qualities. To enhance campus infrastructural conduciveness, improvements in internet quality, coverage, provision of power sockets in corridors, and recreational spaces are recommended. In conclusion, this study finds that the current state of infrastructural facilities and services at Gidan-Kwano campus of Federal University of Technology Minna hinders optimal teaching and learning conditions. The research underscores the urgency of upgrading all campus infrastructural components to ensure a conducive environment. Thus, the study suggests that university management should prioritize enhancing infrastructural conditions and advocates for further investigation into the impact of unconducive infrastructural facilities and services on the quality of teaching and learning.
