Abstract:
Culture is the embodiment of how individuals live and interact, with its essence materializing through language, art, and architecture. Conversely, hotels serve as hospitable sanctuaries, providing lodging and comfort to paying guests and travelers. In the modern era, infusing cultural influences into the design of hospitality establishments wields substantial influence over customers’ perceptions of service encounters, as diverse cultural facets infuse distinct meanings into people’s experiences. The impact of culture on architectural design resonates through spatial arrangement, structural forms, aesthetics, and the perception of quality service.
The evolution of tourism across the globe is frequently spurred by the allure of a region’s cultural and environmental characteristics. Paradoxically, many hotels in Niger State have predominantly overlooked cultural values and traits during their design and implementation phases, favoring contemporary architectural paradigms. Recognizing culture’s pivotal role in the realm of hospitality, it becomes apparent that culture provides the lens through which we apprehend the world, and individuals readily embrace customs and traditions, especially when immersed in the novel culture of a distinct locale.
In this study, an exploratory-descriptive approach has been undertaken, encompassing cultural inventory, in-depth literature reviews spanning journals, books, and periodicals, alongside interviews with local residents and on-site evaluations of existing hotels in Niger State. The empirical findings underscore that a majority of the 31 surveyed hotels in Niger State exhibit minimal to negligible incorporation of cultural elements in their design.
This research endeavors to illuminate the marriage between culture and architecture by dissecting architectural elements and nuances across all scales, ranging from entire settlements to individual edifices, and extending to the final implementation stage. It advocates for the promotion of cultural values within contemporary design endeavors to preserve the architectural identity of a culture. The synthesis of culture and design not only enriches the aesthetic value of hospitality structures but also endows them with the power to narrate compelling stories that resonate with both local heritage and global travelers.
