Abstract:

Vernacular Architecture and Cultural Expression in the Development of a Polo Centre

Vernacular architecture stands as a tangible manifestation of cultural identity, history, and geographical context within built environments. The intrinsic link between architecture and culture serves to establish a harmonious connection between individuals and their surroundings. This paper addresses the pressing need for a contemporary facility, a Polo Centre, in Minna, Nigeria, given the prevailing deterioration of the Minna polo field and its lack of essential amenities, as identified by the Niger State Government. To effectively merge indigenous culture and developmental progress, this research advocates for the integration of vernacular architectural principles into the proposed Polo Centre.

This study offers an illustrative instance of how architectural design can eloquently embody distinct cultural traits. It delves into the profound impact of culture on architectural practices in Niger State, with a focus on prominent ethnic groups like the Gwari and the Nupe, as well as acknowledging the contribution of minority ethnic groups. Employing a descriptive research methodology, the study employs observation schedules, extensive literature review, and a selection of both local and international case studies to gather pertinent data related to sports clubs and vernacular architectural design. Through purposive sampling, field surveys, and observations, five sports clubs were scrutinized, leading to the accumulation of valuable data, presented through tables and images.

The findings reveal a notable underutilization of vernacular architectural principles in sports club design. However, this research also introduces a novel design proposal for the Minna Polo Centre. This proposal encompasses strategies to optimize airflow, integrate indigenous flora, consider gender-sensitive spatial allocation, and incorporate traditional materials and elements into both interior and exterior spaces. It is pivotal to acknowledge that vernacular design principles inherently offer passive and sustainable measures. Elements such as engravings, compound layouts, traditional dwelling forms, and locally sourced construction materials hold the potential to be adopted by governmental bodies and relevant institutions, fostering a deeper connection between people, their heritage, and immediate environment.

In conclusion, this research staunchly advocates for the widespread adoption of vernacular design principles in architectural endeavors across Nigeria. By doing so, the nation can pave the way for designs that are not only sustainable but also intimately intertwined with the rich tapestry of its cultural heritage.
