ABSTRACT

Interpersonal skills (IPS) play a crucial role in the effective acquisition of keyboarding skills among business education students. This research project aims to explore lecturers’ perception of the interpersonal skills required for effective keyboarding skills acquisition by business education students in tertiary institutions in Benue State, Nigeria.

A qualitative research design will be employed, using semi-structured interviews to gather data from lecturers in business education departments. The research objectives include examining lecturers’ understanding of interpersonal skills relevant to keyboarding, identifying the perceived importance of interpersonal skills in keyboarding skills acquisition, exploring the strategies used by lecturers to develop interpersonal skills in students, and assessing any challenges encountered in teaching and assessing interpersonal skills.

The findings of this research project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into lecturers’ perceptions of the interpersonal skills required for effective keyboarding skills acquisition. The research will explore lecturers’ understanding of interpersonal skills relevant to keyboarding, including communication skills, teamwork, professionalism, adaptability, and time management. It will identify the perceived importance of these interpersonal skills in keyboarding skills acquisition, such as their impact on accuracy, speed, efficiency, and overall performance. Additionally, the research will delve into the strategies used by lecturers to develop interpersonal skills in students, such as interactive teaching methods, group projects, role-playing activities, and feedback mechanisms. It will assess any challenges encountered in teaching and assessing interpersonal skills, such as limited resources, varying student capabilities, and the need for specialized training.

The implications of this research extend to lecturers, business education departments, curriculum developers, and policymakers in Benue State, Nigeria. The findings will provide lecturers with a deeper understanding of the interpersonal skills required for effective keyboarding skills acquisition, enabling them to tailor their instructional approaches and assessments accordingly. Business education departments can utilize the research findings to enhance their curriculum by incorporating explicit objectives and activities for developing interpersonal skills. Curriculum developers can consider the findings when designing training materials and resources for business education programs. Policymakers can use the research findings to inform policies that promote the integration of interpersonal skills development in business education programs.

In conclusion, this research project aims to explore lecturers’ perception of the interpersonal skills required for effective keyboarding skills acquisition by business education students in tertiary institutions in Benue State, Nigeria. By understanding lecturers’ perspectives, stakeholders can enhance the teaching and learning of keyboarding skills by emphasizing the development of relevant interpersonal skills.
