CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Our society is blessed with people of different status and background. Many of these people are parents blessed with children attending various institution of learning for the acquisition of knowledge which would bring about positive change to their lives and the environment or society where they live. The social background of every family in the society affects the educational opportunity of their children. The kind of education, the perception of the impact of education on the future careers are all determined by the social status of the family.

Not all the children who are capable of benefiting from educational opportunity are fortunate to do so because of the implication of the lower status of some families. They cannot afford exorbitant expenses associated with formal education. Hence, children from the higher social class are likely to receive better education than their lower stratified counterpart. The idea of fee-paying primary and secondary schools have widened the gap among these various classes of people  more than before nevertheless, education has become one of the important means through which individuals move from one social class to another in the society.
