ABSTRACT
This study examined the role of community based organization in community development in Calabar South Local Government Area. In other to achieve the purpose of the study, the following research objectives were formulated to guide the study; To ascertain the socio-economic characteristics of the respondents in the study area, To identify the types of community based organizations in the study area, To ascertain the various activities carried out by the community based organizations in the study area, To examine the constraints faced by community based organizations in the study area. To make modest suggestion on ways community based organization can improve the lives of the people in the study area. The population of the study comprised of all community based organizations in Calabar south Local Government Area Cross river state. A multi-stage sampling technique was used for the study and a sample of 51 respondents was used for the study. A questionnaire was used for data collection. Data collected were coded and analyzed using the population t- test. The result of the findings revealed that community based organization plays significant roles such as flood control, building of community hall, agro production etc. based on this, it was recommended that; the Government should offer financial support to the various agencies in the area, community members should make laws that will promote successful existence of this organizations, and active members the organizations should be rewarded to motivate others.
