ABSTRACT

This research project aims to identify the skills required by Office Technology and Management Education (OTME) students in colleges of education in Rivers State, Nigeria, for employability in the job market. With the rapidĀ advancementsĀ in technology and changing workplace dynamics, it is crucial to understand the specific skills that OTME students need to possess to enhance their employability prospects. This study seeks to identify the key skills required by OTME students, explore the perceptions of educators and employers regarding these skills, examine the current state of skill development in OTME programs, and propose recommendations for bridging the skills gap to improve studentsā€™ employability.

A mixed-methods research design will be employed, utilizing surveys, interviews, and document analysis to collect data from OTME students, educators, and employers in colleges of education in Rivers State. The research objectives include identifying the skills required by OTME students for employability, exploring the perceptions of educators and employers towards these skills, examining the current state of skill development in OTME programs, and proposing recommendations for bridging the skills gap.

The findings of this research project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the skills required by OTME students for employability. The research will identify the key skills that employers value in OTME graduates, including technical skills related to office technology, communication skills, problem-solving abilities, teamwork, adaptability, and digital literacy. Additionally, the study will explore the perceptions of both educators and employers towards these skills, considering their importance, adequacy, and areas for improvement. Furthermore, the research will examine the current state of skill development in OTME programs, assessing the extent to which these skills areĀ integratedĀ into the curriculum and the effectiveness of teaching and assessment methods. Based on the findings, recommendations will be proposed for bridging the skills gap, encompassing strategies for curriculum enhancement, faculty development, industry collaborations, and experiential learning opportunities.

The implications of this research extend to OTME students, educators, employers, policymakers, and colleges of education. The findings will provide OTME students with insights into the skills they need to develop to enhance their employability in the job market, guiding their efforts towards skill acquisition and self-improvement. Educators can utilize the research findings to inform curriculum development and instructional practices, ensuring that the necessary skills are integrated into OTME programs. Employers can benefit from the research findings by gaining an understanding of the skills they should look for in OTME graduates, informing their recruitment and selection processes. Policymakers can consider the recommendations proposed in the research to inform policies and initiatives that promote skill development and employability among OTME students. Colleges of education can utilize the findings to enhance their OTME programs, aligning them with industry needs and improving graduatesā€™ employability prospects.

In conclusion, this research project identifies the skills required by OTME students in colleges of education in Rivers State for employability. By understanding these skills, exploring perceptions, examining skill development, and proposing recommendations, stakeholders can work towards bridging the skills gap and improving the employability of OTME students in the job market
