TEACHER’S CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT SKILLS AND STUDENTS’ INTEREST IN THE LEARNING OF SOCIAL STUDIES IN SECONDARY SCHOOL IN ESIT EKET LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF AKWA IBOM STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to examine Teacher’s Classroom Management Skills and Students’ interest in the learning of social studies in secondary School in EsitEket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The main instrument used for the collection of data was a structural questionnaire  of the items with two options Yes or No, the data collected were   analyze through the use of simple percentage   statistical method (%). Based on  the data collected and analyzed in the study, the following  findings were: Teacher’s classroom management skills influence students’ interest in the learning of social studies. Also, the study reveals that teachers make use of different skills so as to make their classroom to be managed and it was also dissolved that classroom if not properly managed can affect the academic performance of students in social studies. Finally the study recommended that teachers should adopt the proper skills in the management of their classroom so as to improve the students’ performance in  social studies. Also, the government should organized seminars, workshops as well as conferences for teachers on how to manage classroom effectively among others.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

        Classroom management and administration had often times been used interchangeably to meant the same thing. Classroom management is the process of mobilizing, arranging, directing and giving the resource. In an organization to realized the established goals such as school. (Ekanem, 2006) observed that schools administration refers to the activities performed by performed by person occupying high level of the office in the school.

        According to Nkang (2003) putting these two concepts classroom management and administration together, the level of explaining classroom management will be meaningful.

Uta(2002), is of the opinion that, for classroom to be properly managed, the teacher must have classroom management skills. In maintaining conducive atmosphere for the students to have interest  in the learning of social studies, such skills involves  the classroom discipline which is the major strategy or skills  in maintaining classroom management.

Ntuk (2010), reported that for a teacher to manage his or her classroom effectively, she must co-operate with other teachers to in the school because co-operation is the major factor used in the process of classroom management. Co-operation here means working together with the people towards the realization of a set of goal in the classroom situation. It also involves working together with thee head teacher, other teacher and even student to  achieve  learning.

The laid down rules  and regulation to the conduct of the classroom here to be followed, when all those are done, effective classroom management will take place (Ekanem, 2005).

1.2. Statement of the Problem

        The growing member of failure in social studies in both the external and international examination in recent time among our secondary school students has become a cause of concern not only to the teachers of social studies, but to the parent and teachers of social studies, but to the parent and  the society at large. Again, the loss of interest by students in offering social studies in secondary schools in EsitEket Local Government Area has been a problem with investigation. The knowledge within the interaction has made urgent need of the researcher to find out that, this is caused by poor classroom management skills, poor methods of teaching social studies  has raised a lot of issues. The most outstanding  being lamenting attack on the method applied by teachers  in the teaching of social studies and how to management classroom effectively.

1.3. Purpose of the Study

         The main purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between  teachers  classroom management skills and students interest in the learning of social studies. The following are the purpose of the study;

  1. To assess the relationship between teachers classroom management skills and student interest in the learning  of social studies.
  2. The examine the Relationship between classroom management and student performance.

1.4 Research Questions  

        The following  research questions were put forward for the study;

What is the relationship between classroom management and the academic performance of students in social Studies?

How does Student interest affect the teaching of social studies?

What is the relationship between teacher’s classroom management skills and the teaching of social studies in secondary school?
