ATTITUDE OF TEACHERS TOWARDS EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE IN ETHIOPE EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF DELTA STATE (GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING PROJECT TOPICS AND MATERIALS)

INTRODUCTION
Background to the Study
Examination is an important part of the Nigerian educational system as far as the school is concerned. Examination plays a major role and is also a main indicator of the quality of education, examination is an assessment technique which presents the individual with a sense of questions or tasks geared towards measuring acquired skills and knowledge (Okoye, 2007).
The teachers behaviour in any examination should conform to the code of conduct specified by the examination body, through this, only the most capable candidates are selected to enter into the school system. All rules and regulations must be adhered to by students and teachers.
Many Nigerians it seems possess certificate from various institutions of higher learning in the country through fraudulent means, it is because of the disproportionate emphasis on certificate to almost total neglect of learning that there are examination leakages, forgery and admission rackets.
Since 1977, the infamous “EXPO” examination malpractice has massively spread across the nation and across all forms and all levels of our educational system. Examination fraud or malpractice in Nigeria has reached such a level and intensity, that it is a warning to teachers, examiners, examination bodies, government, the employers, potential employers, parents, admission bodies, as well as higher institutions of learning.
Okoye (2007) contends that principals, teachers, parents and supervisors, are involved in examination malpractice, some principals, teachers and supervisors were dismissed and some were demoted to classroom teachers for their involvement in examination malpractice and about forty (40) teachers and eighteen (18) principals as well as supervisors were reported to state ministry of education and state police command because of their involvement in examination malpractice.
Majority of students lack adequate preparation towards examination, many of them no longer see knowledge and skill acquisition as necessary anymore, the orientation they have form from their predecessors, parents and adult members of the society. This teachers generally have a poor attitude towards encouraging the students to reading rather they encourage themselves in all sorts of crimes and other anti-social activities with little or no more time devoted to serious academic pursuits, in the process, the teacher end up losing confidence in themselves as being unable to succeed through the legitimate means and hence see examination malpractice as the much easier and faster means of securing academic success.
Examination malpractice appears to be common to students at all levels of our institutions in Nigeria, it is against this backdrop that this research attempt to investigate the attitude of teachers towards examination malpractice in Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State.
Statement of the Problem
The major problem militating against the Nigerian educational industry is examination malpractice, in 1977 during the May/June West African School Certificate Examination, mass leakage of questions was so grave, that even market women had access to the hive questions papers. The year become known as EXPO 77, this year was generally known as the time the concept and knowledge of examination malpractice came into our educational vocabulary, in recent times, since the famous EXPO 77 gradually became a house-hold phenomenon at all levels of our educational institutions. Therefore, the statement of problem is, what is the attitude of teachers towards examination malpractice in Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State?
