INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background to the study

This research was carried out to determine the attitude of people towards environmental sanitation in Area F of Nyanya community of Abuja municipal area council (AMAC) whether positive or negative.

There is no doubt that the issue to environmental sanitation is nationwide; however the degree of attitude of the inhabitants vary. The characteristics of environmental sanitation is problems which exist by such factors as uncontrolled reuse disposals. Lack of good water supplies, well-constructed streets and pollution. Furthermore, most of these problems either cause diseases or reduce the life span of the people.

Environmental condition in many areas threatens to reverse the gain made in public health over the last several decades (Ukpong 1991). Every human should have a healthy and productive life in harmony with nature.

In a tragically degraded environment, human health is threatened; most cities of the world ae faced with problem of growth and environmental pollution.

Babalola 1993 lamented over the declining environmental sanitation in Nigeria and appealed to all Nigerian s to be involved in maintaining good sanitation.

Despite various programs by different tiers of government to address the issue of environmental sanitation many Nigerians still have negative attitude towards environmental sanitation. Milas 1994.

Ukpong 1991 emphasized the importance of education in achieving the goals in environmental sanitation, information, education and motivation had indicated that those strategies will provide knowledge and will change the people’s attitude towards environmental sanitation.

Definition of sanitation: sanitation could be defined as arrangement to protect public health particularly, for the official and adequate disposal of swage. Lack of this arrangement or preparation made by the people living in these areas made sanitation of our environment poor and filthy. Environmental Sanitation Education (EES) 2005.

Based on the above back ground the federal government state and local government determined it necessary to getting ridof or help to remedy thedeplorable condition of the community

1.2       Statement of the problem

In Nigeria today many people believe that simply sanitation problems is causes by the government and most causes of the illness is by mosquito bites which leads to malaria. What most people do not know is that safe hygiene practices and access to sanitation are crucial for combating the main health threats. Approximately 88 per cent of all infections worldwide are attributed to unsafe water supply, the lack of safe hygiene practices and basic sanitation infrastructure (Evans 2005). And the scale of the problem is immense: today, nearly twice as many people lack access to sanitation compared with water supply (UN 2005).

In recent years, sanitation has risen up the international policy agenda. In 2002, sanitation was included in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and specifically within MDG 7, Target 10, which sets the aim of halving ‘by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation’. Yet, at national level in most developing countries, hygiene and sanitation do not yet receive much attention, despite important health implications.

  1. Objective of the Study

The main Objective of this study is to examine the attitudes of people towards environmental sanitation; case study-Area F of Nyanya community.

The specific objective of the study are;

  1. To examine the concept of environmental sanitation
  2. To find out the causes of environmental pollution
  3. To examine the attitude of people towards environmental sanitation
  4. To suggest ways on how to improve environmental sanitation in Area F of Nyanya.

1.4       Significance of the Study

More than 2.4 billion people in the world currently lack access to adequate sanitation and are living in unsanitary conditions (Wito, 2004).  Those who suffer from this, tends to be victim of poverty, ill health and an overall poor quality of living.

The researcher hoped that the study will draw the attention of the inhabitants of Area F of Nyanya community to sanitation condition of their environment.

It is hoped that these findings will create awareness in the mind of the people as far as sanitations is concerned and change their attitude towards environmental sanitation.

  1. Scope of the Study

This study discusses the worsening environmental problems of Nigeria cities in relation to the current search for sustainable and more equitable pattern of development.  This study attempt to investigate the attitude of people towards environmental sanitation in Area F of Nyanya Abuja.

This study encountered some constraints which involves the issue of sourcing for suitable materials, especially those relevant to the research topic.  Furthermore, the lack of cooperation from the respondent to disclose necessary information was a hinch. Lastly, due to contemporary security challenges, most of the respondents are not willing to avail themselves to be interviewed most especially the women.

However, upon all these constraints, the researcher was able to pull through and the research work was actualized.
